Antique Victorian Papier Mache Lap Desk

A stunning Victorian papier mache lap desk c.1860 in all probability by Jennens and Bettridge. The lid is scalloped edged and inlaid with ablalone which shimmers in shades of blue and pink in the light. The edging frames a most beautiful picture of various flowers and foliage some of which are painted and the others inlaid with abalone and mother-of-pearl working together to make a truly splendid effect. The sides of the lap desk are slightly concave and lavishly gilded. The lid lifts up and forward to make the writing slope which still retains its original tooled velvet. Across the top is a stamp slope, removable pen tray with storage under and the original inkwell. There would have been a small silk tag at the top of the velvet to enable the flap to be lifted up. This has worn out but with care it is still possible to lift the flap up by lifting either side using both hands at the same time to reveal the storage compartment underneath. To find a papier mache lap desk in this completely original condition is exceptional and a better example would probably be impossible to find. It measures 33cm. max wide x 28cm. deep x 5.5cm high at the front and 10cm. high at the back. In the open position it measures33cm. wide x 50.5cm.
